Hi All, I have several NetGalley November reviews coming your way over the next few weeks. Todays is “A Shift in Shadows” by Maddox Grey.
eARC provided by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A Shift in Shadows follows Nemain, a feline shifter as she is on the run from her ex, who happens to be a wizard and is salty about Nemain leaving him. So salty about it that he gifts Nemain hearts every year on her birthday, the first heart being he Soulmates.
This is a debut novel that has an interesting story arc and good writing it is not very memorable. I read it a few weeks ago and I will most definitely have to reread this first book when the sequel comes out. This is the first book featuring a feline shifter of some sort that either wasn’t overly corny or just basically 100% smut. So I give it props for having a real followable storyline.
The story plays up the baddie level of Nemain’s ex, to the extent that you think his arc is going to cover multiple books. However, though he seems bad for most of the book and Nemain, Magos, and their friends seem to think he is relatively undefeatable it turns out he is just a pussy cat in disguise.
You have all manners of magical creatures and an interesting back story for why they are all in the human realm. Nemain, has powers that no one can explain and her and Magos (her vampire friend) are hoping to keep that a secret. You get the age old Werewolves hate Vampires trope in this which is both hilarious and slightly annoying at times, it is used to foster miscommunication and mistrust. Which is a personal peeve. But overall it was enjoyable.
The ending of the book seemed a little abrupt and did a 180 for how you think the 2nd book will go, with the ex not being the big bad, and ends up being defeated fairly easily. So I am not sure where Grey plans to take the story but I am interested to see.
Till next time,
Kaitlyn
